Regulator nominates CEC as solar panel and inverter warranty agency

The Clean Energy Council looks set to be re-appointed as the product listing body, responsible for maintaining and publishing a list of approved solar panels and inverters eligible for use in the Australian Solar Rebate Scheme.
Australia’s Clean Energy Regulator (CER) has announced plans to appoint a Clean Energy Council (CEC), which will continue to serve as the quality assurance body for solar panels and products under the Small Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES).
For over a decade, CEC has published and maintained lists of approved modules, inverters and, more recently, batteries that meet Australian standards. This list determines which solar panels and inverters are eligible for small technology certification.
However, last year CER launched an application process for organizations interested in production contracts as part of wider SRES reforms prompted by industry feedback and the growth of Australia’s rooftop solar industry.
The regulator said it has now reviewed the applications and proposed to appoint the CEC as the listing authority for solar panels and inverter equipment.
The process will now enter a 28-day consultation period during which the regulator will seek feedback from stakeholders, CER said. Applications must be submitted by 5:00 pm on August 11, 2024, after which final nomination decisions will be made.
CEC chief executive Kane Thornton welcomed the announcement, saying it was a strong endorsement of the board’s “qualified depth, experience and professionalism” and a “positive outcome” for the industry.
“CEC is proud of the role it has played in providing assurance and improving standards for solar panels, inverters and batteries over the years,” he said.
“CEC looks forward to working closely with CER and the renewable energy industry to continue to provide certification services and a robust product quality assurance program that provides confidence and efficiency to product manufacturers and confidence to Australians.”
The CEC will continue to publish lists of approved solar panels and inverters until final nominations are made.
