PENDER COUNTY, N.C. (WECT) – The dispute between Pender County and the Hilo-Columbia Volunteer Fire Department has been resolved, according to a news release from the county.
In 2023, the county filed a lawsuit against the volunteer fire department, alleging it had breached its contract. The suit was settled in June when Shiloh-Columbia agreed to hand over its property and firefighting equipment and no longer provide any firefighting services.
The fire district merged with the Penderley Fire District and the area is covered by the Penderley Volunteer Fire Department.
The fire station has since been refurbished and is now known as Penderley Station 31. The station will host an open day in January next year.
The District also found that Hilo-Columbia did not misappropriate funds or commit any wrongdoing during the proceedings.
”The County is grateful for the contributions made to the County by the many individuals who have served on the Hilo-Columbia Volunteer Fire Department over the decades. Their dedication has saved taxpayers a significant amount of money in fire station construction,” the statement said.
